Following its successful premiere, the ‘Concert for the Marathon’ returns. On Saturday, 17 April 2027, the Vienna City Marathon and the Wiener Symphoniker will once again bring together runners with a passion for music and members of the Wiener Symphoniker in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein Wien, on the eve of the Vienna City Marathon.
The Vienna City Marathon (VCM), Austria’s largest marathon, has been bringing runners to Vienna every spring since 1984. More than a sporting event, the VCM has long combined running with the city’s cultural identity – linking sport and music in the heart of the world capital of music. “Music and sport bring people together and are understood all over the world. By linking marathon running with classical music, we have been showcasing Vienna’s strengths for many years,” says VCM Managing Director Dominik Konrad.
The concert programme mirrors the dramatic arc and emotions of a marathon – from the euphoria of the start through the different stages of the course to the final sprint and the finish line. Works by Beethoven, Dohnányi, Dvořák, Smetana, Brahms, Chabrier, as well as Johann Strauss II and Josef Strauss, will accompany this musical marathon. For the first time, the programme will also feature an overture composed especially for the marathon by Martin Rainer (clarinetist of the Wiener Symphoniker), developed from his VCM anthem. The concert will be conducted by Jakub Przybycień.
Applications are now open: Runners registered for the Vienna City Marathon can submit a video to apply for a place in the orchestra. A panel of experts will select the participating instrumentalists. Tickets for the concert are also now on sale.
Application deadline: 22 November 2026
